Dr. Brown Featured in CEREC Magazine!
Wednesday December 6, 2017 by Melissa Brown, DDS
We’re proud to announce that Dr. Melissa Brown was recently featured in CEREC Magazine! Read on to find out why she was featured and learn about another recent accomplishment of hers that we’re very excited about.
Why Was Dr. Brown Featured in CEREC Magazine?
The Q4 2017 issue of CEREC Magazine celebrates the rise of female dentists. In the 1980s, for instance, women made up only 23.7% of dental school graduates; today they make up 47%. By 2020, it’s estimated that the number of female dentists will overtake the number of male dentists.
CEREC Magazine chose to highlight Dr. Brown because she is an engaged CEREC mentor and an accomplished female dentist.
What Is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics—you can see why we use the acronym!
Using CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technology, dentists can create and insert ceramic restorations (crowns, for example) chairside in a single appointment. Prior to CEREC, this process typically required a lab and multiple appointments.
How Does Dr. Brown Use CEREC?
CEREC is typically used for crowns. With the CEREC technology, Dr. Brown can create full contour crowns in 10-15 minutes. The crowns she creates are made with tooth-colored ceramic material to match the appearance of patients’ natural teeth.
This process benefits patients in a number of ways. For one thing, CEREC requires less drilling, eliminating the need for more anesthetic. CEREC also means there’s no need for temporary crowns—patients can have permanent crowns created right in our office which are then chemically bonded onto their teeth. Also, prior to CEREC, patients had to undergo a messy process so dentists could get mouth impressions. With CEREC, that’s no longer necessary!
In addition to crowns, CEREC can also be used for small bridges, fillings, single tooth restorations, and more.
Why Does Dr. Brown Love CEREC?
Dr. Brown loves being able to plan and design her own implant restorations. She also enjoys not having to use a lab. As she puts it, “There’s a lot less guesswork when you don’t have to rely on a lab.”
In the past, she had to worry about something coming back from a lab that she didn’t like or that required numerous adjustments. These days she can design a crown herself, and it’s ready to go in minutes and requires few (if any) adjustments. Sounds like patients have a lot to like about CEREC too!
What Else Has Dr. Brown Recently Accomplished?
We’re pleased to announce that Dr. Brown has also recently received her Fellowship from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). This is no small feat! To earn Fellowship, she had to take 500 hours of continuing education courses and pass the AGD Fellowship Exam. As a Fellow, Dr. Brown is showing her commitment to education and patient care.
So, if you’re looking for a dentist that is dedicated to using the latest technology to deliver the best results possible, look no further than Dr. Brown at Murray Hill Dental!
