Have you been thinking about having your teeth straightened? If so, Invisalign® may be the ideal solution for you. Learn what it’s like to wear Invisalign® aligners, who makes for a good candidate, and how it compares to traditional braces.

What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign®is a brand of clear aligners designed to straighten your teeth over time. When you choose Invisalign®, you’ll receive a set of custom-fit aligners. These aligners are smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible.

Going forward, you’ll then get a new set of aligners every two weeks, allowing us to gradually and gently straighten your teeth. Once your teeth have reached their desired position, your treatment will be complete!

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?
Most patients make great Invisalign® candidates. The treatment can be used on older teens and adults to treat issues like:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbites and underbites
  • Crowded teeth
  • Open bite (when upper and lower teeth don’t make physical contact with each other)
  • Cross bite (when both the upper and lower jaws are misaligned)

More advanced cases—a very severe overbite, for example—require traditional braces. The best way to determine whether you’re a good candidate for Invisalign®, is to schedule a consultation at our Columbus or Westerville office.

What Is the Process of Getting Invisalign?
Once we’ve determined Invisalign® is right for you, Dr. Brown will create a customized treatment plan based on X-rays and impressions of your mouth. With a digital 3-D image of your teeth, she’ll show you a representation of how your teeth will move at each stage of treatment.

Dr. Brown will also be able to tell you how long your treatment will take. For adults, Invisalign® treatment typically lasts a year. The length of teens’ treatment is comparable to that of traditional braces.

How Do Invisalign Aligners Compare to Braces?
Invisalign® aligners and traditional braces both do an excellent job of straightening teeth. However, patients tend to prefer Invisalign® because the aligners offer a number of benefits over braces. For instance, Invisalign® aligners:

  • Allow patients to enjoy any food they like
  • Can be removed
  • Make brushing and flossing easier
  • Don’t irritate teeth and gums like traditional braces

What Else Should I Know about Invisalign?

For best results, aligners should be worn between 20-22 hours a day. They can be removed for eating, cleaning, and playing sports (a protective mouthguard should be used instead during contact sports). Additionally, the aligners can be taken out for special occasions.

If the flexibility and convenience of Invisalign® aligners is appealing to you, we recommend you set up an appointment to discuss teeth straightening. We make it easy for you! You can schedule your Invisalign® consultation by clicking here or by calling our office.
