3 Reasons Why You’re Getting Canker Sores

Mouth sores can happen to anyone at anytime but there are certain things that can cause them to pop up more often. The causes of canker sores may include:

  • Nutritional Deficiency
  • Mouth Injuries
  • Fruit & Vegetable Intake

Nutritional Deficiency

Many diets lack the proper amount of folic acid, zinc, iron, calcium and B12. Deficiencies of these vitamins and minerals can cause or worsen canker sores, which is why healthy eating is so important. A high quality multi-vitamin could also be added to act as vitamin and mineral “insurance.”

Mouth Injuries

Canker sores are actually tiny ulcers so stress or injury to the mouth can cause them. Brushing too roughly, using harsh oral products, and dental equipment like braces can all be culprits. Not keeping the mouth clean can also lead to tissue inflammation in the mouth thus resulting in sores.

Fruits And Vegetables

Though fruits and vegetables can be very healthy for you some can actually cause or worsen canker sores. Acidic fruits such as oranges, lemons, pineapples and grapefruits can cause stress on the tissue in the mouth. People with mouth sensitivities can also be prone to reactions with certain foods. Other known foods that can irritate or create a canker sore are strawberries, figs, tomatoes and certain types of apples.

For the most part canker sores will heal on their own in a few days to a couple of weeks. To ease the pain you can take over the counter pain relievers but you’ll also want to watch what you eat. Acidic foods like the ones mentioned above should be avoided as well as spicy, very salty, and crunchy foods, which can all cause further irritation. Avoiding the area with your toothbrush is also recommended. If you find yourself with chronic canker sores it could be beneficial to see a doctor about possible deficiencies.
